Collapse of Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

The Bridge is in no danger of collapsing, and has not been ever since it's construction.

It is possible that concern about the bridge has been a subconscious connection with the similarly named, but entirely unconnected, Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge

In 1940 the original, not current, Tacoma Narrows Bridge which was some 2,800 miles away on the west side of the USA, suffered a structural collapse due to poor understanding of aero flutter dynamics. This example has been thoroughly understood and the lessons learned built in to the construction of modern suspension bridges such as the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

To simplify the engineering and mathematical learning of many years it was learnt that bridges have to be more ridged to avoid such failures. And the double deck steel and concrete construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is exactly what was required.

Today's suspension bridges including the Verrazano Narrow Bridge are entirely immune to this type of structural failure, and constant real time monitoring of the status of the bridge means that any structural concerns are identified and remediated without delay.

While occasional lane closures or slow downs on the bridge due to maintenance work may cause temporary frustration for the commuter we are pleased that they ensure that there is no danger whatsoever of any major failure of the bridge integrity.

Bridge History

From its completion in 1964 until 1981 the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. But the idea for the bridge went back a lot before 1964, in fact some of the first serious proposals are from the 1950s when Port Authority of New York and the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority held a joint study on improving traffic flows in the area.
